10 Things I Learned in My First Year of University

Hey there! Good news, I survived my first year of university! It was a rollercoaster ride of emotions, late-night cramming sessions, and self-discovery. Looking back, I realise that university isn’t just about academics—it’s a transformative experience that shapes you into the person you’re meant to be. So, in today’s post, I’ll be sharing ten valuable lessons I learned from this year.

1. Embrace Change

University is all about change. New friends, new challenges, and new environments. The thought of it does sound scary to a lot of us, but I always tell myself I’ll regret the things I didn’t do more than the things I did. Instead of resisting it, embrace the opportunities for growth. Step outside your comfort zone, try new things, and watch yourself progress. You’re future self will thank you for making those decisions!

2. Time Management is Key

We can all agree that balancing coursework, extracurricular activities, and a social life is all too much to deal with. I quickly discovered that effective time management is the secret to success. Prioritise tasks, set goals, and learn to say no when necessary. It’s easy to fall into the trap of saying yes to everything, so ask yourself two questions. Will this benefit me?  Will I really enjoy this? This will help you find out if it’s really worth doing and narrow down the overwhelming number of options out there. You’ll find yourself achieving more while still enjoying your university experience.

3. Seek Help and Build Connections

University isn’t a solo endeavour. There’s a vast network of support available, from professors to counsellors to fellow students. Don’t hesitate to reach out and ask for help when you need it. 99.9% of the time, people are happy to help and as for professors, it’s their job to! So, find out what their out of office hours are and get to know them. Most of them are really friendly!

4. Failure is a Stepping Stone

As cliché as this sounds, failure doesn’t mean the game is over; it’s a stepping stone to success. It might be disappointing, but it’s not the end of the world if you don’t pass an exam. Remember, there’s plenty of support available, and it’s important not to compare yourself to your peers. In the end, we all graduate with the same degree. Instead, embrace setbacks as learning opportunities, reflect on your mistakes, and use them as fuel to do better next time.

5. Take Care of Your Wellbeing

Amid the hustle and bustle of university life, it’s easy to neglect your well-being. But trust me, self-care is essential. Amidst the chaos of my busy schedule, I became so distracted that I overlooked my own health. Get enough sleep, eat well, exercise regularly, and make time for activities that you enjoy. When you prioritise your well-being, you’ll perform better academically, have higher energy levels and won’t risk burnout.

6. Explore and Discover Your Passions

University is the perfect playground to explore your interests and discover new passions. Join clubs, participate in events, and take online courses. It’s safe to say that a University degree already feels like a full-time job, so it’s important to set realistic goals and expectations. Don’t bite off more than you can chew and make the most of summer breaks etc… You might uncover hidden talents and passions that could shape your future career or personal pursuits.

7. Embrace Diversity

University is a melting pot of cultures, perspectives, and backgrounds. Embrace this diversity and engage in conversations with people who have different experiences. During my first year, I had the chance to talk to many foreign students, whose fresh perspectives enriched my learning experience. By embracing their insights, I questioned my assumptions, and began to see things from a different perspective. These interactions help you develop as a person and see the world differently.

8. Celebrate Achievements

It’s easy to focus on upcoming presentations, essays or exams and start planning ahead straight away. Don’t get me wrong, I highly encourage this, but it’s important to give equal importance to our achievements as well. Whether it’s big or small, celebrate your milestones, how many hurdles you’ve crossed and how you’ve adapted to challenges. University is such a big challenge in itself!

9. Stay Curious and Never Stop Learning

University is just the beginning of a lifelong journey of learning. Embracing a mindset of lifelong learning ensures that you continue to grow intellectually, personally, and professionally long after graduation. The world is constantly evolving, and staying curious allows you to continuously improve and seize new opportunities.

10. Enjoy the Present, Embrace the Journey

Last but not least, savour every moment of your university experience. It’s easy to get caught up in the pressure of grades, deadlines, and future plans. But remember, the journey matters as much as the destination. Cherish the friendships, the late-night study sessions, and the exhilarating moments. University is a chapter of personal development that you’ll look back on with fondness.

Conclusion

Take-home message? University isn’t just about textbooks and lectures. Embrace personal development, maximise every opportunity for growth, and make the most of this transformative experience. I’ve always been told that university will be the best phase of my life, so why not make the most of it while I’m here?
