Self-improvement is all about taking conscious steps to develop various aspects of your life, from your physical health and mental well-being to your skills and relationships. It’s a journey of continuous growth, where even the smallest efforts can lead to significant changes over time. By investing in yourself, you can achieve your goals, overcome challenges, and become the best version of yourself.
The beauty of self-improvement lies in the small steps. Grand transformations can be overwhelming, but breaking them down into manageable, everyday actions makes the process not only achievable but also enjoyable. Small steps allow for steady progress and help build new habits leading to lasting change.
Summer is the perfect time to get outside and try new activities. With the relaxed pace that often comes with summer, there’s a chance to pause, reflect, and make positive changes. Plus, the lovely summer weather (if you’re not in the UK) can be incredibly energising, making it easier to adopt new habits and routines.
While many of you have assignments and research projects waiting on you this summer, there’s no reason you can’t dedicate some fun time towards your personal development too! I’ve gathered 30 actionable ways you can level up your summer and change yourself for the better.
1. Step outside your comfort zone: Challenge yourself to try something new or face a fear. It may be something you’ve been putting off for long or just want to give a go. Try a new sport, get better at public speaking, or start a conversation with a stranger; stepping outside your comfort zone is the best way to grow.
2. Start a gratitude jar: Each day, write down something you’re thankful for on a slip of paper and put it in a jar. It could be as simple as waking up to soak in the sun or discovering your new favourite song. At the end of the summer, read through your notes to reflect on the positive moments. This simple practice can boost your mood and shift your perspective.
3. Learn a new skill: Choose a skill you’ve always been curious about, like coding, photography, or cooking. Dedicate time each week to learning and practising—it’s a great way to expand your knowledge and abilities. It’s great to experiment and see what you enjoy, but try one thing at a time to avoid the chaos and feel free to move on if it’s not your thing.
4. Read a book relevant to your dreams: Choose a self-help or inspirational book that aligns with your goals. It could be about entrepreneurship, personal growth, or creative pursuits; find a good book that fuels your passion.
5. Practice mindfulness: Be present in the moment and pay attention to your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings. You can jot them down to make them tangible and work with them later. Practice deep breathing, meditation, or simply take moments throughout the day to pause and reset. Take things slow this summer and be patient with yourself.
6. Make a daily goals list: Start each day by writing down 4-5 goals. This helps you stay focused and organised. Grab my free daily planners to hold yourself accountable and track your goals.
7. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night: Quality sleep is crucial for your well-being.
8. Unplug from socials for an hour each day: Take a break from your phone and social media and just appreciate the present.
9. Declutter one area of your home: Choose a small area, like a drawer or a closet, to declutter each week. This helps create a more organised and stress-free living space. You’ll be thankful you did it, trust me!
10. Practice random acts of kindness: Spread kindness by giving compliments, or helping a neighbour. Small gestures can make a big difference in someone’s day and you’d be surprised by how much happier you feel just by making someone smile.
11. Create a vision board: Map out what areas of life you want to improve in and visualise your goals by creating a vision board. Sprinkle a little fun into your goal planning! Gather images, quotes, and words that inspire you and represent who you want to be. Display it where you’ll see it daily to remind yourself of what you’re working towards.
12. Connect with loved ones: We’re so busy for most of the year, that we often miss out on quality time with friends and family. Make time to schedule that outing or phone call you’ve been making excuses for and create lasting memories.
13. Set aside time for daily exercise. Go for a morning jog, an evening walk, or a dance class and make physical activity a daily habit to boost your health, focus and happiness.
14. Practise self-care Sundays: Dedicate Sundays to self-care activities like taking a long bath, reading, or doing a face mask. It’s a great way to recharge for the week ahead.
15. Set personal goals: Reflect on what you want to achieve for the year ahead and set specific, achievable goals for yourself. Break larger goals into smaller milestones and track your progress along the way.
16. Journal your thoughts: Keep a journal to record your thoughts, experiences, and reflections. Writing can help clarify your feelings, reduce stress, and gain perspective on life’s challenges.
17. Write a letter to your future self: This is really fun once you get into it! Reflect on where you are now and write a letter to yourself to read in the future. Include your current goals, dreams, and thoughts. These may change as you progress and that’s completely okay; it’s all part of self-discovery.
18. Plan your timetable: Grab your favourite app (some personal faves are Google Calendar and Notion) or a piece of paper and schedule important events/dates. Then add in “me days” and days to catch up on work before adding in other necessary events.
19. Practice positive self-talk: Be kind and supportive to yourself by practising positive self-talk. Replace self-criticism with affirmations and words of encouragement that you’d say to a friend. It’s a great way to boost your self-esteem when you’re feeling down.
20. Limit screen time before bed: Reduce your screen time at least an hour before bedtime to improve sleep quality. Try reading a book or listening to calming music instead. You’ll feel so much better the next morning!
21. Manage your finances: Take control of your finances by creating a budget. Track your expenses, set savings goals, and even take up a passive income side hustle for future financial stability.
22. Learn to Manage Stress: Develop healthy coping mechanisms for managing stress, like deep breathing exercises, meditation, or practising relaxation techniques. Prioritise self-care to maintain emotional wellbeing and prepare well for times when life gets rough.
23. Write a list of your “bad habits” and start coming up with ways to tackle each one. Move on from one habit once you’ve successfully dealt with it a couple of times. If not, find out how you could make it harder to do, less satisfying and less obvious then repeat.
24. Make a 10-year career plan and set actionable steps to get there. This could be updating your LinkedIn, networking with professionals or taking up specific courses.
25. Work on being assertive: Learn to say no to what doesn’t align with your goals and prioritise what does. It also helps to do weekly/monthly check-ins to ask yourself if you’re on track towards your goals.
26. Learn to Forgive: Practice forgiveness towards yourself and others. Let go of resentments and negative emotions that may be holding you back.
27. Work on accepting constructive criticism: Use negative feedback as a chance to learn from and grow!
28. Adopt a Growth Mindset: Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. Work on challenging self-doubt and believe in your ability to develop skills and overcome obstacles. Many people succeed not because they’re particularly different from anyone else, but because of blind belief and self-confidence.
29. Create a Morning Routine: Form a morning routine that sets a positive tone for your day. Include activities like exercise, meditation, journaling, and setting a to-do list for the day. A great morning keeps you energised and more productive throughout the day.
30. Document your summer: Take photos, write reflections, or create a scrapbook of your summer achievements. It’s a great way to look back and appreciate your journey.
Thanks for sticking with me till the end! I hope these ideas have refreshed your perspective on self-improvement and motivated you to make the most of your summer. Remember, self-improvement doesn’t need lots of time or big changes; every small decision you make is an investment in yourself. Enjoy your summer!
