I’ve been putting off a lot lately: getting back to that book, ukulele practice, and this blog. My mind has been so caught up with work, I’ve hardly stopped to think about anything else. I think we all need that moment, to just stop and consider where we’re at with everything. We often get so stressed with work that we neglect other things, like hobbies and projects that help us de-stress . Why let those go? After pushing myself to get back in the cycle, I’ve written this blog post about being consistent and why it matters so much.
Just getting started
It’s usually that fear of getting started that makes us put something off for so long. That’s when self-discipline comes in. We’ll delve into that deeper in another post but essentially, it’s all about choosing to do the thing you don’t want to. That way, you’re not letting any temptations get in the way and have more self-control.
What makes this slightly easier, is telling yourself you’re only going to do a task for 5 minutes but then you might realise you actually spent longer than you planned. Even just getting started is enough to build that consistency, small but frequent chunks are better than doing nothing. In the end, the gratitude and satisfaction from just turning up will make you more consistent with your habits, and in the long term, accomplish your goals faster.
Don’t give in to perfectionism
Whenever we’re starting anything, it’s common to think that we have to get it done perfectly. The problem is, it’s hard to build consistency when you’ve got this want to make things perfect. If we value quantity over quality, we can inevitably make more progress. Before typing up this blog post, I reminded myself that all I want is to put it out there, be it perfect or not. That way, I’ve lowered my expectations and made it easier to get through that initial fear.
Just reminding ourselves why we started what we do and how much we care about it, makes us want to do the thing more. This makes the process so much more fun and we’re more likely to stick to our habits.
So, I think I’ve been pretty successful in finally getting to this post. The power of consistency is a concept I’m going to think about more from now on. With anything that you’re doing in your life at the moment, try to develop this habit of being consistent with it. Dedicating a little time to everything can help us live a more balanced lifestyle.
